Growing Arms or Presbyopia: Is it Time to Take Action?

As hard as we might try – and as effective as some skincare and hair products might be – we can’t stop all the signs of ageing. We might start to notice that our knees aren’t as strong as they once were and our backs might ache more, but there is one effect of ageing that is often even more frustrating: presbyopia.

If you’re in the throes of middle age, you might start to think that your arms are getting longer. Suddenly, menus, newspapers, and even your phone are making their way further and further away from your face as you struggle to read the small print.

Thankfully, while many of the physical signs of ageing might be met with a solemn, “Oh it’s a natural part of ageing, I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do.” Not all is lost. The eyes are one thing that can be repaired to an astounding effect.

How does presbyopia affect the eyes?

Our eyes are said to be the window to the soul, but they are also our window to the world. So, when the view from these windows starts to deteriorate, it can be a little distressing. But these changes are a natural part of approaching “middle age” – typically occurring around the age of 40.

Presbyopia literally translates from Latin to “old” or “ageing eye”. It develops as a result of the eye’s natural lens stiffening and becoming less flexible as we get older. At the same time, the muscles around the eye begin to weaken, reducing our ability to focus from near to far and vice versa.

As Professor Dan Reinstein explains, presbyopia is a phenomenon that comes to us all eventually: “If you are slightly long-sighted then you are going to start to notice the presbyopia somewhat earlier in your life.”

For most people, the knee-jerk reaction to this deterioration in vision is to buy a cheap pair of reading glasses or acquire contact lenses. But eventually, the cons of these external visual aids become all too apparent and often too much to stand. This is when the savvy might turn to another solution: Laser Eye Surgery.

Laser Eye Surgery for Presbyopia

For a long time, Laser Eye Surgery wasn’t a suitable solution for presbyopia. That is, until our founder and expert Laser Eye Surgery developed an innovative technique to renew age-related vision loss.

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision was first developed by Prof. Dan in 2004 and introduced to Carl Zeiss’s laser technology in 2009. Since then, we have been offering the treatment at our Harley Street clinic, effectively reversing the ageing process for thousands of satisfied patients!

The procedure involves correcting one eye mostly for distance vision and a little for near vision, and the other eye mostly for near vision and a little for distance vision. The brain is then able to combine these two images to create a “blend zone”, allowing you to see clearly across all distances!

In the video below, our expert surgeon, Mr Glenn Carp, explains a little more about how Laser Eye Surgery can be used to correct presbyopia.

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision offers an effective alternative to reading glasses, contact lenses, and monovision surgery – which is a much less tolerated procedure.

The results of our Presbyopia treatments speak for themselves:

  • Over 98% of PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision patients can read normal newsprint (‘N8’).
  • Over 90% of PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision patients can read the small print on medicine bottle inserts.

And if you need another reason to trust in the PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision, you can read about Professor Dan Reinstein’s own journey with the procedure when he went under the laser.
