What are implantable lenses?

Implantable lenses are advanced medical lenses placed inside the eye to correct vision at its source. Rather than sitting on the surface like glasses or contact lenses, these lenses focus light directly onto the retina, providing clear and stable visual quality.

They include Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL), which work alongside your natural lens, and lens replacement options such as Trifocal, Multifocal and Light Adjustable Lenses, which replace the eye’s natural lens to restore vision at multiple distances. At London Vision Clinic, precise diagnostics determine which lens technology is most suitable for your eyes and lifestyle.

The procedure

Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery is a precise, minimally invasive procedure performed under local anaesthetic. At London Vision Clinic, every treatment is carefully planned using advanced diagnostic imaging and detailed biometric measurements to ensure accuracy and safety.

Pre-operative Assessment

Before surgery, a comprehensive evaluation of your eyes is carried out. This includes detailed measurements of the cornea, anterior chamber depth, pupil dynamics and overall ocular anatomy. These measurements determine the correct lens size and model, ensuring optimal positioning, stability and visual performance.

Lens Implantation

During the procedure, a microscopic incision is created at the edge of the cornea. The lens is gently folded, inserted through this opening and positioned behind the iris and in front of your natural lens. No corneal tissue is removed, and the eye’s natural lens remains untouched.

ICL surgery corrects short-sightedness and astigmatism while preserving the eye’s natural structures. The procedure typically takes around 20–30 minutes per eye. In most cases, the second eye is treated on a separate day to allow for safe monitoring and comfortable recovery.

Benefits of Implantable Lens Surgery

High-quality vision across one or multiple distances

Implantable lenses are designed to deliver clear, sharp distance vision and, depending on the lens type, enhanced intermediate and near vision. Many patients experience improved contrast sensitivity and overall visual clarity compared with glasses or contact lenses.

Reduced dependence on glasses or contact lenses

Whether through ICL or lens replacement surgery, most patients are able to carry out daily activities with significantly reduced reliance on spectacles. For many, this means greater visual freedom for work, driving, sport and travel.

Tailored to your prescription and lifestyle

From preserving the natural lens with ICL to replacing it with Trifocal, Multifocal or Light Adjustable technology, implantable lenses allow treatment to be customised according to age, prescription and long-term visual goals.

Long-term visual stability

Implantable lens procedures provide a permanent solution to refractive error. In the case of lens replacement, the ageing natural lens is removed, meaning cataract development is no longer a future concern.

Rapid return to everyday activities

Most patients resume normal routines quickly after treatment, with visual recovery beginning soon after surgery and continuing to stabilise over the following days and weeks.

Advanced precision and personalisation

Modern implantable lens surgery is guided by detailed biometric analysis and advanced imaging technology. Lens power, design and positioning are carefully selected for each individual eye, and in the case of Light Adjustable Lenses, vision can be fine-tuned after surgery. This level of customisation allows for highly precise visual outcomes tailored to your lifestyle and visual priorities.

Challenges and potential risks

All eye surgery carries some degree of risk, and ICL treatment is no exception. At London Vision Clinic, suitability and risk are carefully assessed before any procedure to ensure the safest possible outcome.

Adaptation period
Some patients notice mild glare, halos or light sensitivity in the early days following ICL surgery, particularly when driving at night. In most cases, these effects settle as the eyes adapt and vision stabilises.

Pressure and positioning checks
Because an implantable lens is placed inside the eye, careful monitoring of eye pressure and lens position is essential after surgery. Your follow-up appointments are designed to confirm that the lens is sitting correctly and that the eye is responding normally to treatment.

General surgical risks
As with any intraocular procedure, there is a small risk of infection, inflammation or other complications that could affect vision. These risks are uncommon and are significantly reduced through detailed pre-operative screening, precise surgical technique and structured aftercare.

Your surgeon will discuss all relevant risks in detail during your consultation, based on your individual eye measurements and clinical findings.
