Important Information
Insurance policies commonly cover the cost of standard monofocal intraocular lenses used during cataract surgery. If you are considering a premium lens option, such as a toric monofocal, trifocal, trifocal toric, extended depth of focus (EDOF) or Light Adjustable Lens (LAL), an additional cost may apply depending on your level of cover. Our team will explain the available lens options, their benefits, any associated costs and whether your insurance policy contributes towards treatment, helping you make an informed decision that best suits your vision, lifestyle and budget. Please contact us to discuss your options.
Private Medical Insurance
If you have private medical insurance, you may be covered for specialist ophthalmic consultations, diagnostic investigations and medically necessary eye treatments, subject to your insurer’s terms and prior authorisation. As every policy is different, we recommend checking your level of cover directly with your insurance provider before arranging your appointment. Please note that consultations relating solely to refractive (vision correction) surgery are not usually covered by private medical insurance.

Using Private Medical Insurance
If you have private medical insurance, our team can help you understand the steps involved before your appointment or treatment. Coverage varies between insurers and policies, so we always recommend checking directly with your provider before booking.
Check Your Cover
Contact your insurer to confirm whether your consultation, diagnostic tests or medically necessary treatment may be covered under your policy.
Request Authorisation
Many insurers require prior authorisation before treatment. Our team can provide the clinical information your insurer may need.
Understand Costs
Once authorisation is confirmed, we can explain any expected fees, excess payments, shortfalls or additional lens upgrade costs before you proceed.
Please note: private medical insurance does not usually cover consultations or treatments relating solely to refractive vision correction, such as laser eye surgery for freedom from glasses.
FAQs
Does private medical insurance cover laser eye surgery?
In most cases, private medical insurance does not cover laser eye surgery when it is performed to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Refractive procedures are usually considered elective treatments rather than medically necessary. However, cover varies between insurers and policies, so we recommend checking directly with your provider before arranging your consultation.
Can I use my private medical insurance for cataract surgery?
Many private medical insurance policies provide cover for cataract surgery when it is considered medically necessary and has been authorised by your insurer. Depending on your policy, premium intraocular lenses, such as trifocal, EDOF or Light Adjustable Lenses, may involve an additional cost. Our team can explain the available options and help you understand what may be covered before treatment.
Which private medical insurance providers does London Vision Clinic work with?
London Vision Clinic regularly welcomes patients insured by many leading UK and international private medical insurance providers. If your treatment is covered, our experienced team can help you understand the referral process, provide the information required by your insurer and guide you through the authorisation process before your appointment.
Will someone help me understand my insurance cover?
Absolutely. Our team is happy to explain the treatment process, discuss the information your insurer may require and answer any questions about referrals or authorisation. While we cannot determine the level of cover provided by your policy, we will do everything we can to make the process as straightforward and stress-free as possible.
