Should I wait for a better procedure to be developed? What’s on the horizon?

Should I wait for a better procedure to be developed? What’s on the horizon?

We all know the feeling of having an “out-of-date” smartphone, car – or anything else for that matter. From feeling completely satisfied (and perhaps even a little superior) when we walk out of the shop or get that long-awaited delivery, knowing that we have the latest and greatest product available on the market. That feeling, however, is not likely to last very long.

Your new phone, which supposedly represents the most cutting-edge technology, is often overshadowed within a matter of months by a new offering. You notice a new advert on the TV or walking down the street. Your friend may be showing off their latest model. However you realise, it is always very frustrating to see just how quickly “new and improved” models hit the market.

Consumer industries like tech corporations and car manufacturers have been at this game for a long time. They have perfected their tactic: holding back their recent innovations from their customers to maintain a steady flow of interest—and therefore profit—from their products.

This way, they don’t have to worry about finding the real next big thing in a hurry.

As frustrating as this is, it becomes a bigger issue when this tactic crosses over into the medical world. When companies and organisations hold back potentially life-saving pharmaceutical and healthcare developments in the name of profit, then there really is a problem.

Developing the Future

That’s why, here at London Vision Clinic, we have a full-time research team dedicated to ensuring that new advances – no matter how big or small – are made available to our patients as soon as possible.

Furthermore, the founder of our clinic, Professor Dan Reinstein, is among a small group of experts pioneering the latest developments in Laser Eye Surgery. This group of experts regularly publish scientific articles and book chapters in peer-reviewed publications, presenting their findings. They also attend and speak at various industry events, including the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS).

This strong commitment to research helps us to uphold a clear picture of the current – and future – state of Laser Eye Surgery.

While there may be changes in the future, some innovations are always going to remain high on the agenda. The latest developments are increasing treatment suitability rates, widening treatment applications, and improving comfort and safety.

The future of Laser Eye Surgery is already here

Thanks to leaps in technology and knowledge in recent years, Laser Eye Surgery has seen significant advancements in these areas. The resulting treatment developments – ReLEx SMILE and PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision – are nothing short of revolutionary.

These new techniques open up Laser Eye Surgery to two groups of people that would previously have been unsuitable for treatment. Patients with presbyopia (ageing eyes) and those with very high prescriptions can now benefit from the wonders of Laser Eye Surgery.

ReLEx SMILE

ReLEx SMILE represents a major step forward from previous techniques such as PRK and LASIK. Surgeons are now able to reshape the cornea using this minimally-invasive ‘keyhole’ treatment. This means speedier treatment and recovery times and a more comfortable experience for our patients.

The minimally-invasive ReLEx SMILE technique also makes it possible to treat patients with contact lens intolerance, very high prescriptions, drier eyes and thinner corneas.

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision

Another revolutionary development in the world of Laser Eye Surgery, PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision now allows us to offer a long-term solution to the effects of ageing eyes (presbyopia).

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is performed using existing Laser Eye Surgery treatment methods, such as LASIK. It offers a safer and more convenient alternative to other treatments, namely intraocular lenses (IOLs) – synthetic lenses implanted into the eye.

Since its introduction in 2003, PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision has offered a solution to countless patients who required reading glasses or bifocals due to presbyopia.

One eye firmly on the future of Laser Eye Surgery

These two developments represent the latest generation of Laser Eye Surgery. We believe that future developments will build on these two techniques to make Laser Eye Surgery a suitable option for even more patients who do not currently qualify.

Future developments will likely include advances in laser technology that will make Laser Eye Surgery suitable for more people at lower costs. But thanks to these latest innovations, it is already possible to get fighter pilot vision in a matter of minutes.

So, there is no need to worry about missing out on a “new and improved” treatment or technique – they are already here. Today is the best time in history – and the foreseeable future – to have Laser Eye Surgery and start enjoying excellent vision.

  • Can an IOLs lense be taken out so one can undergo laser blended treatment?

    • Hi Ellen, I am not sure what you mean. Do you mean to say you have had the IOL procedure and which to opt for Laser Blended Vision instead? It very much depends on individual cases, but you can certainly have laser eye surgery after an IOL procedure. In fact in some instances we recommend this. Please call the clinic on 020 7224 1005 for more information specific to your situation.
      Thanks,
