Practical Tips For Naturally Brighter & Whiter Eyes
What is often the first thing you notice about someone when meeting them for the first time? Or the last thing you remember when they walk away? Why, their eyes, of course!
As humans, we are automatically drawn to the eyes of our fellow beings. Whether they are six feet tall or four; bald or thick-haired; in their twenties or their eighties – there is something about clear and shining eyes that leave a lasting impression.
Unfortunately, as a consequence of various factors, from the environment to our modern, screen-filled urban lifestyles, our eyes are often not as bright and enigmatic as they could be.
But it doesn’t have to be this way. While our eyes may well suffer due to our environment and lifestyle, they mostly suffer due to neglect.
They might become red and puffy after an untreated allergic reaction; perhaps they develop glaucoma due to a buildup of toxins in the body; maybe exposure to the sun has left your eyes hardened and dull.
Whatever the cause of dull and lifeless eyes, there is no quick fix to give them a new lease on life. You can’t simply place some freezing spoons over your eyes once in a blue moon and hope for instant results.
Far from it. The answer to maintaining naturally bright and white eyes – the kind of eyes that leave people feel dazzled when you meet them – is to introduce a few fundamental changes to the way you live. Don’t worry though – they’re also quick and easy!
Whiter and Brighter Eyes – The Natural Way
Our eyes are almost three-quarters water. As a result, dehydration that comes with not meeting the recommended intake of water every day, they – along with other water-rich parts of the body, such as skin, lungs, and kidneys – are left to bear the burden.
But simply drinking a few more glasses of water each day may not be quite the solution you would expect – particularly if you are already drinking the recommended amount of water and are still dehydrated. In fact, there are a lot of things that can affect our body’s hydration levels – over-consumption of caffeine being the number one suspect.
But other factors, such as stress and diets – particularly diets that are high in refined sugar, salt, carbohydrates, and trans fats – can significantly affect our hydration levels.
Change your Diet
Having a poor diet can lead to a build-up of toxins in your liver. And if the eyes are a window to anything (aside from the soul, of course), it is the liver.
Dieticians might recommend replacing white bread and fruit juices with more water-based fruits and veggies – particularly those high in Vitamin A and C. A number of foods are also known for their eye-whitening effects, including: almonds, which are high in Vitamin E and antioxidants; fennel seeds, for their role in digestion and detoxing; and aloe vera, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Turmeric has also been found to be potentially useful in helping to prevent common eye conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is a potent antioxidant and is though to be one of the best supplements you can take to promote eye health.
Thoughtful Blinking
In addition to overhauling your diet and cutting back on caffeine (good luck with that), there are a number of smaller and more immediate steps you can take to promote the appearance of whiter and brighter eyes.
Blinking is your body’s natural mechanism for bathing your eyeballs in antibacterial fluid. This natural liquid helps to fend off irritants that can make their way into your eyes, leaving them feeling comfortable and looking healthy. Blinking more frequently might not sound like a serious solution to brighter eyes, but with our blinking rate reportedly decreasing by as much as 50% when we use screens, blinking could be more effective than you might ever have expected.
