What Pre-Operative Tests Are Performed Before Cataract Surgery?
When undergoing any kind of surgical procedure, you want to feel safe in the knowledge that your surgeon knows as much as possible about your case as possible. Not only does this help to make sure the procedure goes as smoothly as possible, but it also increases the likelihood of achieving the very best outcomes. This is also true for Cataract Surgery.
Prior to the day of your surgery, you will be invited to a pre-operative appointment at your chosen clinic or hospital. At this appointment, a pre-operative examination will be conducted to inform your doctor whether Cataract Surgery is the right option for you and to determine the best course of action for your treatment.
Will I need to do anything to prepare for my appointment?
Once you arrive at our Harley Street clinic, you will be greeted by a member of our clinic staff who will walk you through what you can expect from your pre-operative assessment appointment. This may include a number of tests and examinations.
We ask that you bring with you to your assessment your current distance and reading glasses and a copy of your prescription (if applicable).
If you wear contact lenses, you may be asked to refrain from wearing them for a period before your appointment (this will be explained in more detail when booking your appointment). This is to ensure your cornea regains its normal shape so we are able to obtain accurate measurements.
You will also be asked about your medical history. You should make a note of any medications you are currently taking and inform the consultant during your appointment.
What happens at the pre-operative examination?
At London Vision Clinic, we pride ourselves on offering one of the most extensive pre-operative consultations available. This allows us to get a clear understanding of the extent of your cataract(s) and determine the best treatment for you.
During your pre-operative appointment, one of our Ophthalmic Consultants will perform a number of tests to assess the health of your eyes and the development of the cataract.
Eye drops will be administered to dilate your pupils. This can cause blurred vision for a number of hours, so you should not drive yourself to your appointment and should make arrangements for your journey home.
Your consultant will perform a number of tests, including tests to measure:
- Visual Acuity
- Eye Pressure
- Eye Diagnostics (allows us to measure the power of the intraocular lens required)
Additional tests may be required for some patients – for example, if you have a pre-existing eve condition or if you have previously had surgery (including Laser Eye Surgery) in the affected eye.
The results of your test will then be analysed by one of our specialists. This is to ensure that Cataract Surgery is a suitable option for you (don’t worry, most people are!) and to enable us to advise you on the next step.
