Topography and Tomography

Topography and Tomography are some of the most important safety factors in determining your suitability for Laser Eye Surgery. It is therefore essential that both topography and tomography be carried out during your pre-operative screening appointment.

What is it?

Topography and tomography procedures are performed to take important measurements of your eyes:

Topography is a mandatory pre-operative step in the Laser Eye Surgery screening process. Using an instrument such as the Atlas or Keratron, topography provides the most accurate measurement of the front surface of your eye (the cornea).

The technology used creates a 3D map of the cornea, showcasing the depth of the cornea and any imperfections.

Tomography also provides a 3D map of the cornea, by taking measurements from both the front and the back of the corneal surface. Using instruments such as the MS-39, Pentacam, Orbscan, and Galilei, tomography measures the thickness profile of your cornea, creating a visual map that is essential for identifying any corneal abnormalities and determining whether the thickness of the cornea is suitable for surgery.

What are the benefits?

Topography and tomography are used to help determine the health and thickness of the corneas. This helps your surgeon to determine your suitability for Laser Eye Surgery. In patients with irregular corneas, topography-guided treatments can help to achieve a more regular corneal shape.

What will I feel?

The instruments used in a topography and tomography do not come into direct contact with your eye. They simply scan your eye from a distance; therefore, you will feel nothing during this part of the screening process.
