Can My Vision Return to its Original Level after Laser Eye Surgery?
For many people, making the decision to have Laser Eye Surgery can be a long process. There are a lot of things to consider, from the cost and potential risks to which clinic and surgeon to choose. So, if you’ve finally decided that Laser Eye Surgery is right for you, you want to be sure that your vision won’t return to its previous level. But is this even possible? Let’s take a look at the facts.
How Does Laser Eye Surgery Work?
First things first, let’s look at Laser Eye Surgery in a little more detail. After all, in order to understand how your vision will be improved, you should also know how the process works.
During Laser Eye Surgery, your surgeon will use a high-precision laser to reshape the cornea. This involves removing a pre-determined amount of tissue from the corneal bed. Exactly how much tissue, and where from, will be determined during your comprehensive screening appointment.
Depending on whether you receive PRK/LASEK, LASIK, or ReLEx SMILE, access to the cornea will be achieved in a different way. LASIK – the most commonly performed procedure – involves the creation of a hinged flap on the surface of the cornea. This can be created with either a blade (microkeratome) or a laser. The flap is then put back in place and the healing process can begin!
Laser Eye Surgery can be used to correct all refractive errors, including myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), astigmatism, and – thanks to PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision – presbyopia (ageing eyes).
How long do the results Last?
As Laser Eye Surgery involves removing specific areas of tissue from the cornea, the results achieved are permanent. The vast majority of Laser Eye Surgery patients are able to enjoy their new and improved vision for years to come. However, Laser Eye Surgery is not able to prevent the natural deterioration that affects the eyes as we age. This condition is known as presbyopia (ageing eyes).
The good news is that another Laser Eye Surgery procedure can be performed to account for this deterioration. With PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision, a surgeon is able to correct your vision to enable you to see clearly at distance, intermediate, and near depths of field, allowing you to throw away those pesky reading glasses for good!
Can my vision return to its original prescription?
Laser Eye Surgery is usually able to correct your vision to the same level as your best-corrected vision pre-surgery. This means that your vision will be improved to the same point as when you wore glasses or contact lenses before the procedure.
As Mr. Glenn Carp explains in the video above, “While the cornea can heal a little bit off its targets, it’s not able to heal right the way back to its original prescription.”
If your surgeon believes another procedure would improve your outcomes after Laser Eye Surgery, you may be offered an enhancement procedure. At London Vision Clinic, we offer enhancement procedures to our patients when we believe this is the case.
